Fences (2016)
Fences (2016) is an American period drama film featuring the talents of Denzel Washington, who not only stars but also produces and directs the film. Written by August Wilson, the film is based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name. In North America, Fences was released on December 16, 2016 through Paramount Pictures. The film garnered acclaim from critics for Washington’s and Davis’s performances as well as the screenplay, pacing, cinematography, and emotional tone. Many found it to be an extremely powerful and effective watch.
Set in mid-1950s Pittsburgh, it tells the story of Troy Maxson, a 53-year-old working-class man struggling to make ends meet as a garbage collector. Despite having his dreams crushed of becoming a professional baseball player due to his race, Troy remains proud and strong-willed. He is devoted to his wife of 18 years, Rose, who is streetwise and determined to secure a bright future for their family in their humble home. Similarly, despite the validity of this claim, Troy harbors hidden secrets and repressed feelings due to the town’s history of racism. These factors hinder him from sharing his experiences and opportunities with others, even his own son Cory who dreams of playing college football. Occasionally, we construct barriers to keep people at a distance, but other times, it is ourselves we are trying to contain.
