Field of Dreams (1989)
Field of Dreams (1989) is an American sports fantasy drama film written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson, based on Canadian novelist W. P. Kinsella’s novel Shoeless Joe. Ray Kinsella resides with his wife, Annie, and daughter, Karin, on their corn farm in Dyersville, Iowa. Struggling with his strained relationship with his deceased father John, a devoted baseball enthusiast, Ray is afraid of not accomplishing anything meaningful in his life. One evening while strolling through the cornfield, he hears a voice whispering, ‘If you build it, he will come’. In that moment, he envisions a baseball diamond and ‘Shoeless’ Joe Jackson (who passed away in 1951) standing in the center. With Annie’s unwavering support and belief in him, Ray decides to plow part of their corn crop to construct the field of his dreams, despite potential financial difficulties.
As Ray works on the field, he shares with Karin the story of the 1919 Black Sox Scandal. After some time passes and Ray begins to have doubts, Shoeless Joe suddenly appears one evening. He asks Ray if he can return and mentions that there were eight players involved in the scandal. Ray warmly welcomes them back, saying they are all welcome anytime. The next day, Joe returns with his teammates but Annie’s brother, Mark, is unable to see them. He expresses concern for their financial situation and offers to buy their land. At the same time, the voice urges Ray to ‘ease his pain’. Later, at a PTA meeting attended by Ray and Annie, she defends controversial author and activist Terence Mann against someone attempting to ban his books.
