However, his attempts are hindered when Marla Singer, also pretending to be someone else, joins the same groups. Unable to maintain his facade or ignore her presence, his insomnia returns. In an effort to regain control and get some sleep, the narrator arranges for them to attend separate sessions and even exchanges contact information with Marla in certain circumstances, much to her reluctance.
While returning from work, the Narrator encounters a soap salesman named Tyler Durden. After an explosion destroys his apartment, the Narrator moves into Tyler’s dilapidated home. They become friends and establish an underground fight club in the basement of a bar. In addition, Tyler rescues Marla from an overdose and they begin a sexual relationship, although the Narrator remains distant towards her. The Narrator quits his job and uses blackmail to obtain funds for the growing Fight Club, which attracts new members such as his friend from cancer support group, Bob. As Tyler transforms the club into Project Mayhem and carries out acts of vandalism in rebellion against societal norms, the Narrator starts to feel excluded.
