Directed by Miguel Sapochnik, Finch (2021) is an American post-apocalyptic survival film written by Craig Luck and Ivor Powell. After a devastating solar flare destroyed the ozone layer, Earth became a desolate wasteland ravaged by harsh weather and intense UV rays. Finch Weinberg, a robotics engineer and one of the few survivors, resides in an underground laboratory in St. Louis with only his loyal dog Goodyear and helper-robot Dewey for company. While battling an undisclosed illness (hinted at through his reading on radiation poisoning), Finch dons a protective suit when venturing outside to scavenge for supplies. Knowing his time is limited, he strives to create an advanced humanoid robot to care for Goodyear after he’s gone.
Finch inputs vast amounts of encyclopedic knowledge into the robot, which includes a manual for canine training and care. However, Goodyear is initially hesitant to trust the machine, who eventually adopts the name Jeff. It is discovered that a destructive storm is headed towards St. Louis, where they are located, putting their lives at risk. In preparation for the dangerous journey ahead, Finch modifies a motorhome and they set off towards San Francisco. Due to the rushed departure, Jeff was only able to download 72% of his data, and he requires additional training to expand his mental capacity. As Jeff’s condition deteriorates, Finch takes on the responsibility of teaching him valuable life lessons and how to protect Goodyear. Despite finding Jeff’s curious nature both amusing and frustrating at times, Finch witnesses him slowly exhibiting more independent behavior.
