Finding Forrester (2000)
The American drama film, Finding Forrester (2000), was written by Mike Rich and directed by Gus Van Sant. In the Bronx, sixteen-year-old Jamal Wallace doesn’t fully embrace his potential as an intelligent student. Instead, he chooses to spend his time playing basketball with his friends. They capture the attention of William Forrester, a local recluse who is known as somewhat of an urban legend in the neighborhood. One day, Jamal’s friends dare him to sneak into Forrester’s apartment, but their plan goes awry when Jamal is caught off guard and flees, leaving his backpack behind. Later on, Forrester returns the backpack to the street but not before making a few edits to Jamal’s personal writing that were inside. Intrigued, Jamal asks Forrester to read more of his work.
However, this request angers Forrester and he sternly tells Jamal to write a 5,000-word essay explaining why he should ‘stay out of my home’. Undeterred, Jamal completes the task and leaves it on Forrester’s doorstep. To his surprise, this leads to an invitation inside. As a result of his exceptional test scores, Jamal receives a full academic scholarship and enrolls at Mailor-Callow, an esteemed private school in Manhattan. Part of the deal is that he must join the school’s basketball team. Jamal discovers that Forrester, who wrote the award-winning novel Avalon Landing, is also a Pulitzer Prize winner but has not released any other books. Forrester agrees to assist Jamal with his writing on the condition that Jamal respects his privacy and does not discuss him with others.
