Finding Neverland (2004)

Finding Neverland (2004) is a biographical fantasy directed by Marc Forster and written by David Magee. The film is based on Allan Knee’s 1998 play, The Man Who Was Peter Pan. In the early 1900s, acclaimed playwright Sir James Matthew Barrie encounters Sylvia, a widowed mother of four (George, Jack, Peter and Michael), during a chance meeting in Kensington Gardens. As they grow closer, Barrie becomes not only a playmate but also a father figure to the boys. Their playful adventures become fodder for Barrie’s latest work inspired by young Peter Llewelyn Davies. Despite his affection for the family, Barrie faces criticism for his close relationship with them. After losing her husband to cancer, Sylvia bravely raises her sons on her own.
Barrie’s wife Mary, who eventually divorces him, and Sylvia’s mother Emma du Maurier both disapprove of the amount of time Barrie spends with the Llewelyn Davies family. Emma also attempts to control her daughter and grandsons, especially as Sylvia’s health deteriorates. Despite this, Barrie continues to go on adventures with Sylvia and her children. Being a child at heart himself, spending time with the family holds a special place in his heart. Eventually, Barrie takes these adventures and transforms them into the beloved play Peter Pan. Although producer Charles Frohman initially doubts its appeal to upper-class theatergoers, he reluctantly agrees to put on the production.
