The American musical fantasy film, Finian’s Rainbow (1968), is the creation of Francis Ford Coppola, adapted from E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy’s stage production of the same name. It revolves around the arrival of a sly Irish immigrant, Finian McLonergan, in America with his daughter Sharon and a carpetbag full of hidden gold. Their destination is Rainbow Valley, a fictional location in Missitucky where Finian plans to bury his fortune in hopes of it multiplying due to its proximity to Fort Knox. However, they are being pursued by Og, a leprechaun who wants to reclaim his treasure before he transforms into a human.

Other characters involved in the drama include Woody Mahoney, a hopeless romantic who falls for Sharon; Susan Mahoney, Woody’s mute sister who can only express herself through dance; Howard, an African-American botanist and Woody’s business partner determined to create a hybrid of tobacco and mint; and Senator Billboard Rawkins, whose prejudice against African-Americans adds to the conflict. Complications arise when Rawkins, in pursuit of gold he believes to be in Rainbow Valley, makes some racial slurs while trying to seize the land from its inhabitants. Sharon is enraged and expresses her wish for him to turn black. Unbeknownst to her, she is standing on the exact spot where a legendary crock of gold, with the power to grant three wishes, is buried.
