In the American drama film Fireflies in the Garden (2008), written and directed by Dennis Lee, we see a strained relationship between English professor Charles and his son Michael. Since their boyhood road trip, when young Michael falsely claimed to have lost his glasses, their interactions have been filled with rule breaking and retaliation. When Lisa’s younger sister Jane stays with them while she is pregnant, she becomes close with Michael and takes his side against Charles. This tension only escalates when Michael embarrasses Charles in front of his colleagues by claiming to have written a Robert Frost poem. In response, Charles punishes him by making him hold out his arms horizontally but later Jane comes to his aid when he is unable to lift them. As the conflicts continue to build, it is ultimately Michael who intervenes and forces Charles to the ground during a quarrel between his parents.

In the present, Ryne, now a college senior, picks up Michael from the airport. Meanwhile, Charles and Lisa head to Jane’s house for a celebration of Lisa’s graduation from college. During their drive, Charles swerves to avoid hitting Christopher, Jane’s son. Tragically, the car collides with a telephone pole, causing Lisa’s death and severe injuries to Charles. In an attempt to comfort Christopher and Leslie (Jane’s daughter), Michael shares that Jane was his best friend before she became their mother. He takes them on a fishing trip with firecrackers, just as he used to do with Jane when they were growing up. However, in a misguided moment, he encourages them to keep this activity a secret from their mother. When Jane eventually discovers what happened, she lovingly scolds Michael while an angry Charles also chastises him.
