Fireproof (2008), the first film released by both Samuel Goldwyn Films and Affirm Films, is a thought-provoking American Christian drama directed by Alex Kendrick. The plot centers around Caleb and Catherine Holt, a married couple facing challenges in their relationship. On the job, Caleb stresses the importance of always supporting one’s partner, yet at home, the two are constantly bickering. Catherine criticizes Caleb for his selfishness in wanting an unnecessary and costly boat while she considers paying for her sick mother’s medical equipment. She is also frustrated with his habit of viewing internet pornography and leaving all household responsibilities and expenses to her. Feeling attacked, Caleb loses his temper and says things he doesn’t mean. This results in Catherine wanting a divorce, which an enraged Caleb agrees to.

Caleb’s father and friend, Michael, urge him to postpone the divorce process. His father suggests trying the Love Dare, a 40-day challenge designed to improve a marriage by changing the way one treats their partner. Although hesitant, Caleb agrees without informing Catherine. Meanwhile, at her workplace, Catherine openly flirts with Dr. Keller, causing concern for Caleb. Despite his lack of enthusiasm and seeing the tasks as a mere checklist rather than genuine effort, Caleb continues with the Love Dare, spurred on by his father and Michael. However, Catherine’s colleagues caution her against trusting Caleb, believing he is simply trying to manipulate her for a favorable divorce settlement. As Catherine remains unfazed and grows closer to Dr. Keller, Caleb seeks solace from his father while Michael reveals that he has also experienced divorce before marrying his current spouse.
