First Man (2018)
First Man (2018) is an American biographical drama film directed by Damien Chazelle from a screenplay by Josh Singer, based on the book of the same name by James R. Hansen. It follows NASA test pilot Neil Armstrong in 1961 as he flies the X-15 rocket-powered spaceplane, which accidentally bounces off the atmosphere. Despite successfully landing in the Mojave Desert, his colleagues question his recent series of mishaps and suggest that his focus may be divided due to personal troubles. Armstrong’s daughter Karen is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, and he desperately tries to save her by keeping track of her symptoms and researching potential cures. Tragically, she passes away shortly thereafter. Overcome with grief and unsure of his future at NASA, Armstrong applies for Project Gemini and joins NASA Astronaut Group 2. He and his wife Janet relocate to Houston with their son Rick, along with other astronaut families. There, he befriends fellow civilian test pilot Elliot See and Ed White.
As Armstrong begins his training, Deke Slayton stresses the significance of the Gemini program to the new astronauts. The Soviet Union had surpassed the United States in every milestone of the Space Race. During this time, Armstrong’s family also expands with the birth of their second son, Mark. In 1965, after conducting the first extravehicular activity (EVA), Armstrong is chosen to lead the Gemini 8 mission alongside pilot David Scott. Unfortunately, just prior to their launch, fellow astronauts See and Charles Bassett are killed in a T-38 crash, adding to Armstrong’s sorrow over recent losses. Despite these challenges, Armstrong and Scott successfully launch and dock with the Agena target vehicle. However, a malfunction causes their spacecraft to rapidly roll and puts them in danger. With quick thinking and precise action, Armstrong is able to use the RCS thrusters to abort the mission and bring them back to safety after nearly losing consciousness.
