Firstborn (1984)
Firstborn (1984), an American drama film starring Teri Garr and Peter Weller, tells the story of 16-year-old Jake Livingston. After his parents’ divorce two years ago, his mother Wendy has been seeing other men, even though she is still in love with her ex-husband. However, when she finds out that her ex is getting remarried, she quickly starts dating a man named Sam on the rebound. Jake and his younger brother Brian are initially unsettled by this situation, but Sam’s charming nature and his gift of dirt bikes win them over. However, Jake becomes suspicious when Sam suddenly mentions starting a restaurant shortly after telling Jake about his plan to start a security business. There is cause for concern when Sam moves into the Livingston house after being kicked out of his apartment.
This is something Wendy has never allowed with her previous boyfriends, despite some of those relationships lasting longer than hers with Sam. The tension between Jake, Brian, and Sam quickly escalates as Sam begins to physically harm them. This unhealthy atmosphere also leads to strained relationships for Jake with his friends and girlfriend, as well as Brian getting into fights at school. Suddenly, Sam and Wendy disappear for a few days without warning, leaving only a note stating they are at a lake. During their absence, Jake goes through their bedroom and discovers illegal drugs. The following day, a stranger shows up looking for Sam, causing Jake to realize that their sudden departure was to avoid dealing with Sam’s associates in the drug trade after a deal went wrong.
