Five Feet Apart (2019)
The American romantic drama film, Five Feet Apart (2019), was directed by Justin Baldoni and written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis. The movie was inspired by Claire Wineland, who had cystic fibrosis. Stella Grant and Will Newman, two teenagers with CF, struggle with the progressive genetic disorder that damages their organs and leaves them susceptible to infections. Due to their compromised immune systems, those with CF should remain at least six feet apart from each other. Stella is meticulous about managing her illness, following strict medication and doctor’s orders. On the other hand, Will has a more nonchalant attitude and frustrates Stella with his carelessness. Despite being part of a new drug trial for B. cepacia infection, Will’s pessimistic prognosis makes him ineligible for a lung transplant.
For a considerable amount of time now, Stella has been on the transplant list. Recently, she found out that Will has not been keeping up with his treatments and she offers to assist him. In exchange, Will simply requests permission to sketch a portrait of her. As time passes, he starts following Stella’s social media updates and eventually they start completing their treatments together. Gradually, their feelings for each other deepen, but due to the circumstances, they are unable to physically be as close as they want to be. Unfortunately, Stella’s G-tube becomes infected and she requires surgery to have it replaced. During this difficult time, Will discovers that Stella’s sister Abby passed away a year ago after a hazardous stunt. With Abby no longer by her side, Stella must face the procedure alone and struggles with feelings of guilt for being the only one who survived. Upon learning about Abby’s death, Will shows up to support Stella and sings her the same song Abby used to sing before surgeries.
