Flatliners (1990)
Flatliners (1990) is an American film that combines elements of science fiction, horror, and psychology. One medical student named Nelson Wright persuades his peers – Joe, David, Rachel, and Randy – to join him in exploring the mysteries of death. After flatlining for a minute and being brought back to life by his friends, Nelson cryptically mentions seeing a boy from his past who he bullied. The others are intrigued and decide to follow suit. During their experiences with temporary death, Joe is enticed by an erotic encounter reflecting his promiscuous ways. Some disagreement arises between Rachel and David about their determination to remain ‘dead’, but ultimately David goes ahead on Halloween and encounters a girl he tormented as a child named Winnie Hicks.
The three men begin experiencing hallucinations related to their visions. Nelson is physically assaulted twice by Billy Mahoney. Joe, who is engaged, is tormented by the women he secretly recorded during his sexual affairs. They remind him of the false promises he made to them. David is confronted on a train by 8-year-old Winnie, who taunts him just as he once did to her. Rachel decides to be next in line for flatlining. David rushes in too late to stop her, but she survives despite the power outage and inability to use defibrillator paddles. However, she too is haunted by memories of her father’s suicide from her childhood years.
