Flight (2012)
Directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by John Gatins, Flight (2012) is an American drama film which follows the story of airline pilot Captain Whip Whitaker. In an attempt to combat his fatigue after a sleepless night in his Orlando hotel room, Whip resorts to using cocaine. During his flight on SouthJetAir Flight 227 to Atlanta, the plane experiences intense turbulence upon takeoff. Co-pilot Ken Evans takes over while Whip discreetly mixes vodka into his orange juice and rests. However, he is abruptly awakened as the plane suddenly plunges downwards. In a bold move, Whip manages to regain control by pulling out of the dive and flipping the plane into inverted flight before making a controlled crash landing in an open field. The impact causes him to lose consciousness and sustain moderate injuries. When he awakens in an Atlanta hospital, he is greeted by his old friend Charlie Anderson, who represents the airline’s pilots union.
He informs Whip that he was able to save 96 people out of 102, unfortunately losing two of his crew members and four passengers. He also mentions that his co-pilot is currently in a comatose state. While taking a break for a cigarette, Whip encounters Nicole Maggen, who is recovering from a heroin overdose in the same hospital. The following day, Harling Mays, a close friend and drug supplier, picks him up from the hospital. After retiring to his late father’s farm, Whip meets with Charlie and Hugh Lang, an attorney. They explain that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) conducted a drug test while he was unconscious and it showed evidence of intoxication during the flight. However, Hugh manages to get the toxicology report dismissed on technicalities.
