The story follows seasoned con-man Nicky Spurgeon as he crosses paths with Jess Barrett, a novice grifter attempting to lure and deceive him with the help of a pretend jealous husband. Despite their initial failure, Nicky imparts some crucial advice on remaining level-headed in the face of unexpected challenges. Later, he meets with Jess for drinks and reveals his father’s dark past involving a ‘Toledo Panic Button’ tactic – shooting one’s partner as a show of loyalty. Jess eventually follows Nicky to New Orleans, where she becomes part of his crew alongside members Farhad and Horst. After Nicky and Jess develop a romantic relationship by testing out their pickpocketing skills, Nicky becomes upset because his father always warned him against getting emotionally involved with coworkers.
Things take an interesting turn at the fictional Super Bowl XVII when Nicky begins placing extravagant bets with gambler Liyuan Tse. Unfortunately, he ends up losing all the money earned by the crew. In a desperate attempt to win back the money, Nicky challenges Tse to choose any player on or off the field and has Jess guess the number picked. Luckily, Jess realizes that Farhad is wearing jersey number 55 and it’s all part of another con. The duo successfully cons millions from Tse. Later, Nicky reveals how he had subtly programmed Tse to choose 55 since his arrival through subliminal prompts throughout his day. This impresses Tse so much that he graciously returns all the money to Nicky.
