In the movie Footloose (1984), directed by Herbert Ross, Chicago native Ren McCormack and his mother Ethel move to the small town of Bomont to stay with Ren’s aunt and uncle. At church, he meets Reverend Shaw Moore, his wife Vi, and their daughter Ariel, who is known for her rebellious nature. While at school, Ren becomes friends with Willard Hewitt and discovers that dancing and rock music are banned within the town limits by the town council. Despite this restriction, Ren falls for Ariel, much to the dismay of her boyfriend Chuck Cranston. In an attempt to impress Ariel and prove his worthiness, Ren challenges Chuck to a game of chicken involving tractors and comes out victorious. However, Reverend Moore disapproves of Ren’s influence on his daughter and forbids her from seeing him. Undeterred, Ren takes Ariel, Willard, and their friend Rusty to a bar just across the state line where they can dance freely.
Willard’s jealousy over not being able to dance leads to a fight with another man who was dancing with Rusty. As they drove back home, Ariel recounted the events of her older brother’s death five years ago. She explained how he had been involved in a car accident after a night of drinking and dancing. Despite their father Reverend Moore’s efforts, who had convinced the town council to pass strict laws against alcohol, drugs, and dancing, Ariel’s memories were still vivid. Upon learning about the anti-dancing and rock music ordinance that prevented their high school from organizing a senior prom, Ren felt compelled to challenge it. To overcome his shyness on the dance floor, Willard turned to Ren for guidance. Meanwhile, Chuck confronted Ariel about her true feelings towards Ren and things took a violent turn between them before they ended their relationship.
