For Keeps? (1988)
For Keeps (1988), directed by John G. Avildsen, follows the story of Darcy Elliot and her boyfriend Stan Bobrucz as they navigate their final year of high school in Kenosha, Wisconsin. As they prepare to attend college – Darcy to study journalism at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and Stan at Caltech for architecture – they decide to spend a weekend together with the help of Darcy’s best friend Lila. However, things take an unexpected turn when Darcy discovers she is pregnant. With Thanksgiving approaching, the couple announces their news to their families, but neither Donna nor Stan’s Catholic parents are supportive. While Donna suggests an abortion and Stan’s parents urge them to give up the baby for adoption, Darcy initially plans to go through with an abortion but ultimately changes her mind, much to Stan’s relief.
During the holiday season, the couple’s decision to keep their baby caused a rift between them and their parents. They then proceeded to rent an old apartment and get married, with the support of their friends. Despite not having parental consent, the marriage was carried out. Darcy’s high school counselor, Miss Giles, advised her to drop out of school due to the possibility of other girls following in her footsteps and becoming teenage mothers themselves. However, Darcy still worked towards obtaining her GED. On prom night, Darcy unexpectedly goes into labor. While their daughter Thea is born healthy, Darcy experiences postpartum depression which hinders her from bonding with her child. Stan struggles to make ends meet with his part-time job salary.
