Ford v Ferrari (2019)

The American sports drama film, Ford v Ferrari (2019), was directed by James Mangold and written by Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Jason Keller. In an effort to increase their car sales, Ford Motor Company Vice President Lee Iacocca suggests purchasing the dominant Ferrari team participating in the 24 Hours of Le Mans to Henry Ford II. However, owner Enzo Ferrari uses this offer to secure a deal with Fiat that allows him to maintain ownership of Scuderia Ferrari. His insults towards Ford and the entire company prompt them to develop a competing car for Le Mans, resulting in Iacocca hiring retired driver Carroll Shelby, who had previously won Le Mans in 1959 with his racing team Shelby American. Shelby then brings on board talented British driver and mechanical engineer Ken Miles.
Shelby and Miles work together to develop the UK-built Ford GT40 Mk I prototype at Los Angeles International Airport. However, when Miles gives a harsh critique of the new Ford Mustang at its launch, Ford Senior Vice President Leo Beebe becomes concerned about Miles as a potential liability for public relations. As a result, Shelby reluctantly decides to exclude Miles from the upcoming race at Le Mans and instead sends Phil Hill and Bruce McLaren in his place. Unfortunately, none of the Fords are able to finish the race. When Ford questions Shelby’s decision-making and considers firing him, Shelby defends himself by pointing out that despite the GT40’s reliability issues, it still managed to reach an impressive speed of 218 mph (350.8 km/h) on the Mulsanne Straight before breaking down. He emphasizes that designing a race car cannot be a group effort and requires an individual vision. In response, Ford instructs Shelby to continue with the project and report directly to him.
