Forever Strong (2008)
The American sports drama film, Forever Strong (2008), was directed by Ryan Little and written by David Pliler. Rick Penning is the captain of his high school rugby team, coached by his father Richard Penning. Unfortunately, the team’s excessive drinking and drug use ultimately leads to their loss against their rivals, the Highland Rugby Team. In a moment of recklessness after the defeat, Rick gets behind the wheel while under the influence and ends up causing a serious accident involving his girlfriend Tammy. As a result, he is sent to a Juvenile Detention Center in Salt Lake City. The center’s manager, Marcus, teams him up with the Highland rugby team under coach Larry Gelwix’s guidance. Initially disheartened by this change, Rick struggles to fit in with his new teammates until one of them shares some wise words that cause him to rethink his actions. Despite being given drugs hidden in a rugby ball from a friend, he ultimately decides to throw them away.
Through hard work, he earns a spot on the highly esteemed Highland team. Upon arriving at practice each day, he notices the coach chatting with various team members instead of coaching. However, when it’s his turn to speak with the coach, he ends up confessing about the drugs concealed in his rugby ball. The coach handles the situation and reveals that his teammates want him to be captain. Drawn in by the strong bond of brotherhood, he is able to overcome homesickness. After a celebratory meal, while helping a mother and her children with a flat tire, one of the boys gets hit by a car passing by. This tragic event leaves Rick coping with the loss of his first true friend Kurt. Released from custody, he moves back in with his parents. His father pressures him to reveal secrets about the Highland team’s strategies and plays, leading to arguments between them that Rick refuses to get involved in.
