Forrest Gump (1994)

Forrest Gump (1994) is an American comedy-drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Eric Roth. Based on Winston Groom’s novel of the same title, the movie tells the story of a man named Forrest Gump who shares his life experiences with strangers at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia. Growing up in Greenbow, Alabama in 1951, young Forrest has a curved spine and is given leg braces to help him walk. Living with his mother who runs a boarding house, the two are visited by many tenants including a young Elvis Presley who incorporates Forrest’s jerky dance moves into his performances. On his first day of school, Forrest meets Jenny Curran and they become inseparable friends. Forrest often faces bullying due to his physical disability and lower intelligence.
However, while escaping from a group of bullies, his leg braces break off, revealing his exceptional speed. This talent eventually leads him to earn a football scholarship at the University of Alabama in 1963, where he is coached by Bear Bryant. During this time, Forrest also witnesses Governor George Wallace’s Stand in the Schoolhouse Door and kindly returns a dropped book to Vivian Malone Jones. As a top kick returner named on the All-American team, Forrest even has the opportunity to meet President John F. Kennedy at the White House. Once he graduates college in 1967, Forrest eagerly enlists in the U.S. Army. It is during basic training that he makes a close friend named Benjamin Buford Blue (nicknamed ‘Bubba’), who convinces Forrest to join him in the shrimping business after their service.
