Four Rooms (1995) is an American black comedy film that combines elements of farce and anthology. The movie features a star-studded team of writers and directors including Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez, and Quentin Tarantino. Taking place on New Year’s Eve at the fictional Hotel Mon Signor in Los Angeles, the plot is centered around Ted, a bellhop who experiences four unique encounters with different hotel guests during his first night on the job.

Honeymoon Suite. The Missing Ingredient (Allison Anders). Ted helps a unique group of ladies carry their bags to the Honeymoon Suite. As he aids them, he discovers they are a coven of witches working to undo a curse on their goddess, Diana. In order to do so, each member must add an item to a giant cauldron. However, one woman still needs to retrieve her ingredient – semen – and they only have one hour left. After Ted departs, they successfully complete the ritual and Diana emerges from the cauldron.

Room 404. The Wrong Man (Alexandre Rockwell). In Room 404, Ted is suddenly caught in a surreal hostage scenario. Siegfried crazily accuses him of being involved with his wife Angela. Ted is compelled to play along with the dangerous game, unsure of what’s actual reality. Attempting to flee through the bathroom window, Ted gets stuck and unfortunately gets vomited on by a partygoer from the floor above. As he manages to break free and climb out of the window, another guest enters Room 404 and is met with the same aggressive behavior from Siegfried.

Room 309. The Misbehavers (Robert Rodriguez). As the husband and wife head to a New Year’s Eve party, they pay Ted $500 to watch over their children, Sarah and Juancho. He instructs them to stay in their room, but when he steps out, they cause trouble by exploding a bottle of champagne. In need of toothbrushes, they call Ted who tries but fails to put them to sleep. After leaving, Ted is called back only to find the room in even more disarray – a painting has been turned into a dartboard using lipstick and a syringe, Juancho has a cigarette, Sarah has a bottle of liquor, the television is tuned to an adult channel, and they have discovered a deceased woman hidden in the box spring.

Penthouse. The Man from Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino). Famous director Chester Rush and his companions occupy the penthouse. They request various items including a block of wood, three nails, a ball of twine, a bucket of ice, a doughnut, a club sandwich, and a hatchet. However, when Ted brings in the supplies, he replaces the hatchet with a meat cleaver. To his surprise, they invite him to participate in their challenge. Inspired by an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents titled ‘Man from the South’ (incorrectly referred to as ‘The Man from Rio’), Chester’s friend Norman has wagered his little finger against Chester’s car that he can successfully light his Zippo lighter ten times in a row. Despite Ted’s attempt to leave, Chester persuades him to stay by offering $100 to listen and an additional $900 to act as referee and carry out the finger severance if Norman fails.
