Foxfire (1996) is an American teen drama film directed by Annette Haywood-Carter. Based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates, it follows the story of four high school girls as they navigate their coming of age. Maddie Wirtz, a senior living in Portland, Oregon, has plans to complete her last year of high school before heading off to college. However, her routine is disrupted when she meets ‘Legs’, a mysterious and beautiful drifter seeking shelter from the rain at her school. On the same day, Legs persuades Maddie and her classmates Rita Faldes and Violet Kahn to confront their teacher Mr. Buttinger. The confrontation turns violent, leading students Goldie Goldman and the three companions to flee together.

Later, Legs goes to Maddie’s house, after finding the address in a notebook she dropped in Mr. Buttinger’s classroom. They spend the night together and continue to bond in the morning before school. However, despite their explanation of what happened, Maddie, Rita, Violet, and Goldie are suspended for their confrontation with Mr. Buttinger. With nowhere else to go, they all end up at an abandoned house that Maddie had mentioned as a potential place for Legs to stay. This is where all five girls quickly become close friends, using the abandoned house as their ‘headquarters’. They also engage in rebellious activities such as breaking into the school to retrieve part of Maddie’s art school application (which the principal had refused to give her before kicking her out) and getting matching flame tattoos from Legs.
