The psychological legal crime thriller film Fracture (2007) stars Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling, with direction by Gregory Hoblit. The story revolves around wealthy Irish aeronautical engineer Theodore ‘Ted’ Crawford, who discovers that his wife Jennifer is having an affair with police detective Robert Nunally. In a heated confrontation, Crawford shoots his wife and confesses to the act when Nunally arrives on the scene. Despite her injuries, Jennifer survives but remains in a coma. Crawford is arrested for attempted murder and awaits trial in jail. Meanwhile, he engages in a battle of wits with the ambitious deputy district attorney William ‘Willy’ Beachum, who is about to leave criminal law for a position at prestigious law firm Wooton Sims. As Beachum prepares for trial, he also flirts with his future boss Nikki Gardner at Wooton Sims.

During the trial, Crawford chooses to represent himself, pitting an untrained defendant against a seasoned prosecutor. He reveals that Officer Nunally, who arrested him, had been having an affair with his wife and physically assaulted him during the arrest. Furthermore, he claims that Nunally was present during his interrogation. As a result of this information, Crawford’s confession is deemed inadmissible by the judge due to being ‘fruit of the poisonous tree’. Beachum uncovers evidence that contradicts Crawford’s alleged involvement in the crime – his gun does not match the shell casings found at the scene and has never been fired. This confuses law enforcement officials, especially since CCTV footage shows that Crawford did not leave his house during the time of the shooting up until his arrest.
