In the American horror flick directed by Roy William Neill, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), Lon Chaney Jr. and Bela Lugosi star as the two graverobbers who venture into the Talbot family crypt during a full moon. In hopes of reviving Larry Talbot, they remove the wolfsbane that was buried with his body. To their surprise, the full moon’s light transforms Larry back to life. Later that night in Cardiff, he is discovered by police with his apparent fatal head wound and taken to Dr. Mannering for treatment. When the full moon rises again, Larry once again becomes the ferocious Wolf Man and ends up killing a police constable. The next morning, feeling remorseful for his actions, Larry pleads with Mannering to call for help before he hurts anyone else.
However, Inspector Owen doubts Larry’s true identity and accuses him of being an impostor since they had confirmed reports of his death previously. After Larry’s violent outburst, he is subdued by orderlies and restrained to his bed with leather straps. In disbelief of his claim to be a werewolf, Mannering and Owen embark on a trip to Llanwelly to explore the Talbot tomb. Upon arrival, they discover Larry’s body missing and one of the grave robbers dead in a similar manner as the previous killings four years ago. In a desperate attempt to break free, Larry bites through the restraints and escapes from the hospital. He sets out to find a way to cure his supposed inability to die and seeks out Maleva, a gypsy woman who suggests seeking help from Dr. Frankenstein.
