The American romantic comedy-drama film, Frankie and Johnny (1991), directed by Garry Marshall, tells the story of two individuals facing emotional struggles. One is a waitress named Frankie who attends a baptism in Altoona, Pennsylvania for her godson. Meanwhile, a man named Johnny is freshly released from prison. After returning to her job at the Apollo Cafe in New York City, Frankie’s boss Nick sends her co-worker Helen home early due to dizziness. Later on, Johnny shows up looking for work, and despite his criminal background, Nick gives him a job as a short-order cook. As the day ends, Frankie goes back home to find Bobby installing shelves in her apartment. However, she soon learns that he is actually the boyfriend of her neighbor Tim. That night, Johnny arranges for a prostitute to spend time with him but only asks her to lie down next to him fully clothed.

The next day, Nick informs his staff that Helen has been hospitalized. Frankie and her co-worker Cora visit an unconscious Helen and express their fears of dying alone. The next day, after assisting a man who had an epileptic seizure, Johnny asks Frankie out on a date, but she declines. Helen ultimately passes away and at the funeral, Frankie, Cora, and fellow waitress Nedda are surprised to see Johnny in attendance. Upon returning to work, Johnny once again asks Frankie out but she turns him down. However, he ends up having a one-night stand with Cora instead, much to the later sharing of details with Frankie and Nedda. As time goes by, Johnny persistently tries to win over Frankie’s affections by asking her to accompany him as his date for a co-worker’s going-away party. But once again, she rejects his advances.
