The film Free Guy (2021), directed and produced by Shawn Levy, follows the story of a group of players in a popular MMORPG called Free City. The NPCs within the game are easily identified by their signature sunglasses and often find themselves engaged in chaotic battles with the players. One NPC, named Guy, works as a bank teller alongside his best friend Buddy, a security guard. However, the NPCs are unaware that they are living in a video game and remain oblivious to the chaos caused by the players. Meanwhile, Millie Rusk, an unemployed software developer, is playing Free City to uncover proof that Soonami Studios stole her source code for her concept game Life Itself. Her friend Walter “Keys” McKey is sympathetic but hesitant to help due to his current job in technical support at Soonami.

After Millie’s avatar “MolotovGirl” catches Guy’s attention with her rendition of his favorite song, he begins to break away from his programming. This surprises Buddy when Guy unintentionally shoots a skull-masked player who is robbing the bank, and then takes their sunglasses. As a result, Keys and Mouser attempt to ban him from the game, thinking he is a hacker pretending to be an NPC. However, when Guy accesses the players’ view of the game, he discovers new areas and meets Millie at Revenjamin Buttons’ hidden stash house. Together they try to steal evidence that will lead them to her source code. Initially believing Guy is a beginner in the game, Millie advises him to level up before attempting the heist again. Despite this setback, Guy quickly progresses by completing missions in a kind manner and stands out amongst other players. Soon enough, he becomes a worldwide sensation known as “Blue Shirt Guy”. Meanwhile, Soonami’s CEO Antwan Hovachelik makes enhancements to his character design for the sequel Free City 2.
