However, she quickly devises a plan to escape by handcuffing the social worker to a bed and fleeing in her run-down car. Her destination: Stockton, where she plans to live with her grandmother. On the way, she stops to see her boyfriend Chopper Wood – a local gang member – to inform him of her trip. He gives her a gun to sell when she arrives at her grandmother’s house. Tragically, moments after Vanessa departs from Chopper’s side, he falls victim to a drive-by shooting.
Stranded on the side of the highway with a broken-down car, Vanessa’s fate takes an unexpected turn when she is picked up by Bob Wolverton – a counselor at a school for troubled boys. During their lengthy drive, Vanessa develops a deep trust in Bob and opens up about her troubled past, including her experiences with sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather and foster parents. At one point, she shows him a photo she carries in her wallet of her biological father, unknowingly revealing that it is actually notorious mass murderer Richard Speck. However, later that evening, Bob shocks Vanessa by confessing to being the infamous ‘I-5 Killer’ and attempting to attack her. Despite his betrayal, Vanessa manages to defend herself by shooting Bob multiple times before fleeing the scene.
