Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, From Hell (2001) is a period detective horror film directed by the Hughes Brothers and written by Terry Hayes and Rafael Yglesias. Set in 1888, it follows Mary Kelly and her fellow London prostitutes as they navigate their harsh daily existence. Ann Crook, a former prostitute now married to painter Albert, has recently given birth to a daughter named Alice. However, when Ann is kidnapped, the women find themselves embroiled in a conspiracy involving high society. As one of the women is brutally murdered, it becomes clear that a killer known as Jack the Ripper is targeting each of them.

The attention-grabbing murders of prostitutes have caught the interest of Whitechapel’s Inspector Frederick Abberline, a brilliant but troubled man who often relies on his psychic abilities to aid in his police work. Still grieving the loss of his wife during childbirth two years prior, Abberline’s colleague, Sergeant Peter Godley, struggles to understand his unorthodox theories. As Abberline delves into the case, he discovers that an educated individual with knowledge of human anatomy must be responsible for the precise and surgical methods used in the killings. Eventually, they locate Ann in a workhouse where she has been lobotomized under the pretense of being violent and insane. It is implied that this procedure was carried out in order to silence her.
