Fruitvale Station (2013)

The film Fruitvale Station (2013), directed and written by Ryan Coogler, explores the events leading up to the death of 22-year-old Oscar Grant III from Hayward, California. The movie opens with actual footage of Oscar and his friends being held by BART Police at the Fruitvale station in Oakland on January 1, 2009 at 2:15 a.m., moments before the fatal shooting. Throughout the day, Oscar faces challenges such as infidelity in his relationship, losing his job at Farmer Joe’s grocery store, and considering returning to drug dealing before ultimately deciding to get rid of his stash. In the evening, he joins his mother Wanda’s birthday celebration and agrees to take the BART train to San Francisco for New Year’s festivities instead of driving at her request.
During the train ride back, Oscar encountered Katie, a customer from his former job at the grocery store. Her recognition prompted an old acquaintance from prison to take notice and a physical altercation ensued. The situation drew the attention of BART police who detained several passengers including Oscar. While being restrained by Officers Caruso and Ingram, Oscar was fatally shot in the back by Ingram. Caruso, visibly shocked, demanded an explanation for the violence. Despite undergoing emergency surgery, Oscar did not survive and passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital. The aftermath of his death included widespread protests and riots throughout the city due to multiple witnesses capturing footage of the incident on their phones and cameras.
