Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006)
Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006) is an American romantic drama film directed by Steven Shainberg and written by Erin Cressida Wilson, based on Patricia Bosworth’s book Diane Arbus: A Biography. The story begins with Diane Arbus arriving to photograph a nudist colony, then flashes back three months to New York City in 1958. There, Diane assists her husband Allan, an established photographer from a long line of studio owners. She comes from a wealthy family of furriers. However, as a city wife and mother of two, she feels uneasy with this mundane lifestyle. One evening during a party, she catches the eye of her mysterious neighbor who recently moved upstairs; his face is mostly covered except for his eyes and mouth. After the party, Diane opens up to her husband about standing on their patio and revealing her bra to this stranger.
A few days later, after receiving news of a plumbing issue from her daughter, Diane uncovers a clump of hair blocking the pipe. While removing the obstruction, she discovers a key amongst the hair. After disposing of both items in the trash, she contacts her upstairs neighbor to inquire about his potential involvement with dog grooming. When he denies this, he suggests that she check out the basement, where Diane comes across an elaborate chair and sideshow poster featuring a ‘wild man’. Interestingly enough, an armless woman appears and begins dusting off the chair. Assuming she is the neighbor’s spouse, Diane can’t help but feel curious about her mysterious neighbors. Unable to sleep that night, she remembers her husband’s long-forgotten gift – a camera – and decides to visit her neighbor upstairs for a formal introduction and to request permission to take his portrait.
