Gallipoli (1981)
Gallipoli (1981) is an Australian war drama film directed by Peter Weir and produced by Patricia Lovell and Robert Stigwood. Set in Western Australia during May 1915, the story follows Archy Hamilton, an 18-year-old stockman and aspiring sprinter who yearns to join the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Under the guidance of his uncle Jack, Archy trains hard and looks up to world champion Harry Lasalles. During an important race against the farmhand Les McCann, Archy runs barefoot while Les rides his horse without a saddle. Meanwhile, Frank Dunne, a former railway laborer struggling financially, also participates in the race with hopes of winning the prize money. Despite betting heavily on himself, Frank’s financial situation remains dire.
Eventually, both Archy and Uncle Jack make their way to the athletics carnival. After being defeated by Archy and feeling bitter about losing his bet, Frank is surprised when he sees that Archy has given all his prize money to Jack and decided to enlist instead of going home. They both agree to travel to Perth together, but lacking money they decide to sneak onto a freight train. The next morning, they wake up to find that the train had stopped at a remote desert station instead of reaching Perth. To their dismay, the station attendant informs them that their only options are to either wait two weeks for the next train or walk 50 miles across the dry lake bed to reach a more accessible location.
