Gangs of New York (2002)
Gangs of New York (2002) is an American historical drama film directed by Martin Scorsese, based on Herbert Asbury’s book, The Gangs of New York. Set in the slum of Five Points in 1846, the story follows two rival gangs. The Anglo-Protestant Confederation of American Natives, led by William ‘Bill the Butcher’ Cutting, and the Irish Catholic Dead Rabbits, led by ‘Priest’ Vallon, engage in their final battle for control of the territory. After Bill kills Vallon and declares the Dead Rabbits outlaws, Vallon’s young son witnesses it all and is sent to an orphanage on Blackwell’s Island. Sixteen years later, Amsterdam returns seeking revenge and finds his father’s hidden knife. With help from old acquaintance Johnny Sirocco, he learns about the other local gangs who all pay tribute to Bill as their leader.
In Amsterdam, Bill keeps his past hidden as he seeks to join the gang. He finds out that many of his father’s former subordinates are now working for Bill, despite his strong anti-Irish beliefs. Every year, Bill celebrates his triumph over the Dead Rabbits, and Amsterdam secretly plans to publicly kill him during this event. As Amsterdam gains Bill’s trust and becomes his apprentice, he also gets involved in the corrupt dealings of Tammany Hall politician William M. Tweed. During an assassination attempt on Bill, Amsterdam saves him and struggles with the idea that he may have done it out of true loyalty. Meanwhile, Johnny is also attracted to pickpocket Jenny Everdeane, whom Amsterdam develops feelings for as well.
