Generation Kill (2008)
An American seven-part television miniseries titled Generation Kill (2008), aired on HBO from July 13 to August 24, 2008. It is an adaptation of Evan Wright’s book about his time as an embedded reporter with the US Marine Corps’ 1st Reconnaissance Battalion during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, developed for television by David Simon, Ed Burns, and Wright. The production was helmed by director Susanna White and producer Andrea Calderwood. Familiar faces among the talented cast include Alexander Skarsgård as Sergeant Brad ‘Iceman’ Colbert, James Ransone as Corporal Josh Ray Person, and Lee Tergesen portraying Wright himself. HBO greenlit the project for a $56 million budget and it was shot over six months in South Africa, Mozambique, and Namibia, with a strong emphasis on maintaining authenticity throughout filming. Set during the initial phase of the Iraq War from late March to early April 2003.
Accompanying various recon marines during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, one witnesses the contrasting dynamics within the military. A Rolling Stones journalist is embedded with reconnaissance marines during their mission in Iraq and documents the blend of disturbing and comical events he experiences. This is an account of the 1st Marine Reconnaissance Battalion’s involvement in the second Allied invasion of Iraq, as seen through the perspective of Evan Wright, a Rolling Stone reporter who was embedded with the Battalion and served as inspiration for the series.
