The film Gerald’s Game (2017), directed and edited by Mike Flanagan, is a psychological horror thriller with a screenplay co-written by Flanagan and Jeff Howard. The movie is an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name, which was once considered impossible to bring to the screen. Jessie and Gerald Burlingame travel to an isolated lake house in Fairhope, Alabama for a romantic retreat. On their way there, they encounter a stray dog that Jessie wants to assist, but Gerald disagrees. While Gerald takes Viagra, Jessie prepares a raw steak from the refrigerator for the dog to eat. After seeing this, Gerald scolds her for wasting the expensive Kobe beef, but ultimately allows her to leave it out for the dog. They then enter the house together with Gerald leaving the door open. Once inside, Jessie changes into a new slip while Gerald restrains her using handcuffs attached to the bedposts.
During a tense argument, Gerald accuses Jessie of not putting effort into repairing their relationship. Tragically, he suffers a heart attack and falls onto Jessie, leaving her handcuffed and unable to move. After some time passes, Jessie sees Gerald get up and start talking. It dawns on her that she is hallucinating, as his body remains on the floor. He cruelly reminds her of their strained marriage and his erectile dysfunction. He also points out her dehydration and fatigue. In her hallucinations, Jessie sees herself as more confident and admits truths about their marriage she had been avoiding. These visions prompt her to remember the glass of water Gerald had left within reach above the bed. Unable to drink it directly, she ingeniously uses a tag from her slip as a makeshift straw to reach the water.
