Geronimo: An American Legend (1993)
Geronimo: An American Legend (1993) is a historical Western film directed by Walter Hill and written by John Milius. It loosely chronicles the events leading to Geronimo’s surrender in 1886. The renowned healer reluctantly agrees, along with his fellow Apache, to settle on a reservation designated by the American government under the Indian Removal Act. Despite their efforts to adjust, many of the Apache struggle to let go of their traditional lifestyle while the government fails to fulfill its promise of protecting tribal lands from encroachment by American settlers. This ultimately leads Geronimo to take up arms against the U.S. Cavalry and Al Sieber, a notorious Indian fighter who massacres a group of Apache for practicing their religious beliefs in secrecy.
Geronimo leads a ragtag militia, outsmarting the army multiple times with well-executed guerrilla attacks. The focus is on Lieutenant Charles B. Gatewood, a West Point graduate tasked with capturing Geronimo alongside Sieber and Britton Davis, a young and eager cavalryman. Gatewood struggles between his begrudging admiration for Geronimo and his duty to his country. Brigadier General George Crook, Gatewood’s superior, holds Geronimo in high regard while holding his own government in contempt for their self-serving actions. However, despite surrendering to Crook initially, Geronimo manages to escape once again and convinces over half of the reservation to join him.
