Jack is planning to escape with her to South America, but first he must attend his brother Frank’s funeral in Newcastle, who supposedly died in a drunk driving accident. Despite warnings from his bosses to avoid trouble due to the friendship between Gerald and the Newcastle mob, Jack decides to investigate Frank’s death on his own. At the funeral, he meets his niece Doreen and Frank’s mistress Margaret, who are both elusive about what really happened.
Determined to find answers, Jack heads to Newcastle Racecourse in search of Albert Swift, an old acquaintance who may have information about his brother’s death. However, Swift manages to evade him. Later on, Jack comes across another former associate named Eric Paice, but he refuses to disclose who is employing him as a chauffeur. Following Eric brings Jack to Cyril Kinnear’s country home, where he discovers more about Frank’s mysterious death. Jack confronts Kinnear and has a disappointing exchange. Later, he runs into the charming yet inebriated Glenda. As Jack prepares to depart, Eric cautions him against causing tension between the Fletchers and Kinnear. Upon returning to town, Jack is accosted by tough guys who demand that he leave.
