Ghost (1990) is a supernatural romance film directed by Jerry Zucker and written by Bruce Joel Rubin. Banker Sam Wheat and his girlfriend Molly Jensen move into a Manhattan loft with the help of Sam’s colleague Carl Bruner. One night, they are attacked by a mugger on the street. Despite Sam’s attempt to protect her, he returns to find himself dead and unable to communicate with Molly or anyone else in the living world. While stuck as a ghost, Sam is constantly frustrated by his inability to interact with his surroundings and other spirits he encounters. One day, while Molly is away, the mugger breaks into their apartment. Startled by Sam’s presence, Molly’s cat attacks the intruder before he can steal anything. Seeking revenge, Sam follows the mugger back to his own apartment where he learns that his name is Willie Lopez and that he was purposely targeted by him.

Later, Sam comes across Oda Mae Brown, who passes herself off as a fake psychic. However, he soon discovers she has the ability to hear him and implores her to help warn Molly. Despite initial hesitation, Oda Mae agrees after being kept awake by Sam’s persistent singing. Despite her deep understanding of Sam and Molly’s relationship, Oda Mae struggles to convince Molly of the existence of an afterlife until Sam prompts her to say ‘ditto’, their code for ‘I love you’. Molly eventually confides in the police and Carl about Willie’s involvement, but they dismiss the story due to Oda Mae’s long history of fraudulent activities, which deeply disappoints Molly. Meanwhile, Sam proceeds to follow Carl and learns that he had hired Willie with the intention of stealing Sam’s book containing bank passwords.
