Ivan Reitman directed the American supernatural comedy film Ghostbusters (1984), which was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. After their first encounter with a ghost at the New York Public Library, Columbia University parapsychology professors Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler are fired by the university dean due to the lack of credibility in their paranormal research. Undeterred, the trio establishes ‘Ghostbusters’, a service for investigating and eliminating paranormal activity from an abandoned firehouse. They utilize advanced nuclear-powered equipment to capture and contain ghosts, but initially have few clients. After cellist Dana Barrett experiences a paranormal event in her apartment and mentions witnessing a demonic dog-like creature named ‘Zuul’, she seeks help from the Ghostbusters. While Ray and Egon research Zuul and details about Dana’s building, Peter investigates her apartment and attempts to seduce her unsuccessfully.
The Ghostbusters are called in for a job at the Sedgewick Hotel, where they must remove a troublesome ghost named Slimer. However, due to a lack of proper equipment testing, Egon advises caution as using their proton packs could result in a dangerous explosion. After successfully capturing the ghost and storing it in their ecto-containment unit, supernatural activity begins to escalate throughout the city. As their fame grows, the Ghostbusters hire a fourth member, Winston Zeddemore, to handle the increasing number of calls for help. Things take a turn when an Environmental Protection Agency inspector named Walter Peck becomes suspicious of their work and requests to assess their equipment. Peter defends his team’s methods and refuses Peck’s request. Meanwhile, Egon warns that their containment unit is reaching its limit and paranormal energy is spreading rapidly.
