The American documentary film, Ghosts of the Abyss (2003), was produced by Walden Media and directed by James Cameron, known for his 1997 film Titanic. In August and September of 2001, Cameron and a team of scientists embarked on an expedition to the RMS Titanic wreckage, utilizing Russian deep-submersibles to capture unprecedented images. The documentary showcases the use of two purpose-built remotely operated vehicles to provide a unique perspective of the shipwreck, and incorporates CGI technology to recreate the original appearance of the Titanic. Narrated by actor Bill Paxton (who also appeared in Cameron’s Titanic), the film premiered in IMAX 3D and received a nomination for Best Documentary at the BFCA awards.

Award-winning filmmaker James Cameron takes a journey back to his greatest inspiration – the legendary wreck of the Titanic. Alongside leading experts in history and marine studies, as well as friend Bill Paxton, he sets out on an unscripted adventure to the final resting place of nearly 1,500 people who tragically lost their lives almost a century ago. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology specifically designed for this expedition, Cameron and his team are able to extensively explore every part of the ship inside and out like never before. Using cutting-edge 3D photography, viewers will feel as though they are part of the crew right there in the dive subs. This unprecedented motion picture event is tailor-made for IMAX 3D Theatres and specially equipped 35mm 3D theaters nationwide.
