Gigli (2003) is an American rom-com crime movie, written, co-produced and directed by Martin Brest. The plot follows Larry Gigli, a low-ranking member of the Los Angeles mob, who isn’t quite as tough as he pretends to be. His boss, Louis, orders him to kidnap the younger brother of a powerful federal prosecutor – a mentally challenged individual – in order to negotiate Starkman’s (the New York mob boss) release from prison. After some convincing, Gigli manages to persuade the young man, Brian, to go with him by promising a trip to ‘the Baywatch’ – clearly Brian’s favorite show. However, Louis doubts Gigli’s capabilities and hires Ricki, a woman who takes charge.

Gigli is enamored with Ricki, despite feeling resentful towards Louis and his lack of trust in Gigli’s abilities, and also being frustrated by Brian’s insistence on going to ‘the Baywatch’ and Ricki’s sexual orientation. The situation takes a sinister turn when they are given orders to sever Brian’s thumb – an action they are both reluctant to carry out. In a clever move, Gigli retrieves a thumb from the morgue and sends it as Brian’s. During a moment of vulnerability, Gigli opens up about his feelings for Ricki and they end up sleeping together at his apartment. However, their temporary happiness is disrupted when they are summoned by the mob boss. To their surprise, Starkman reveals that he was not on board with the plan to kidnap a federal prosecutor’s brother or harm Brian in any way.
