Girl, Interrupted (1999)
Girl, Interrupted (1999) is a biographical psychological drama film, written and directed by James Mangold. In the year 1967, in New England, an aimless 18-year-old named Susanna Kaysen experiences a nervous breakdown and takes an overdose of aspirin and alcohol. Despite her protests, she is admitted into Claymoore, a local psychiatric hospital. During her stay in the ward, Susanna forms bonds with other patients such as Polly ‘Torch’ Clark, who has schizophrenia; Cynthia Crowley; Daisy Randone, who engages in self-harm and struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder; Georgina Tuskin, a compulsive liar and Susanna’s roommate; and Janet Webber, a sarcastic woman with anorexia. However, it is Lisa Rowe, a rebellious sociopath with an alluring charm that captures Susanna’s attention the most. Lisa encourages Susanna to defy therapy and stop taking her medication.
Lisa aids the girls in sneaking through the hospital’s underground tunnels at night, while taunting not only them but also the staff. This includes Valerie Owens, a strict head nurse. Susanna discovers her borderline personality disorder during regular therapy sessions with Dr. Melvin Potts, who initially hides this information from her. During a rare supervised group outing to celebrate Daisy’s upcoming release, the women stop at an ice cream parlor. There, Susanna is confronted by Barbara Gilcrest and Bonnie, the wife and daughter of an English instructor with whom she had an affair. Barbara publicly scolds Susanna for her actions, prompting Lisa to come to her defense by rudely insulting Barbara. The other girls join in and mock both Barbara and Bonnie before they leave feeling humiliated.
