Gladiator (2000) is a film set in ancient Rome, directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson. In 180 AD, Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius returns home after leading the army to victory against Germanic tribes near Vindobona on the Limes Germanicus. Emperor Marcus Aurelius informs Maximus that his son, Commodus, is not fit to take over as emperor. Instead, he offers Maximus the role of regent in hopes of restoring the Roman Republic. However, Commodus is angered by this decision and kills his father in his tent. He then declares himself emperor, but Maximus refuses to pledge allegiance to him. As a result of his defiance, Maximus is arrested by Praetorian Guards led by Quintus. They threaten to kill him and his family, but he manages to fight them off and escape to his home in present-day Spain.

There, he discovers that his wife and son have been brutally executed. After burying the bodies, Maximus collapses from his injuries. He is later discovered by slave traders and taken to Zuccabar in Mauretania Caesariensis, where he is sold to gladiator trainer Proximo. Despite his initial reluctance, Maximus competes in local tournaments and uses his combat skills to secure victories and gain popularity. This earns him the moniker ‘the Spaniard’ and he forms friendships with Juba, an African gladiator from Carthage, and Hagen, a Germanic gladiator. Meanwhile, Commodus plans 150 days of gladiatorial games to commemorate his father and win favor with the people of Rome. When Proximo reveals that he was a former gladiator freed by Marcus Aurelius, he urges Maximus to ‘win the crowd’ in order to earn his own freedom.
