Glory (1989) is a historical war drama film by Edward Zwick that follows the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first all-black regiments in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Captain Robert Gould Shaw, having been injured at Antietam, returns to Boston on medical leave with the help of his influential father. Shaw is later promoted to colonel and given command of the 54th regiment, with his friend Cabot Forbes as his second-in-command. The initial recruit for their unit is Thomas Searles, an intelligent African-American who previously worked as a secretary for the Shaw family. Other soldiers who join include John Rawlins, Jupiter Sharts, Silas Trip, and a young mute drummer known affectionately by Rawlins as ‘Honey’.

After discovering that the Confederacy has declared that captured black men will be sent back into slavery and any black soldier caught wearing a uniform will face execution, Shaw gives his men the option of an honorable discharge if they do not wish to fight. Despite this offer, none of the men choose to leave. Under the strict guidance of Sergeant-Major Mulcahy, who is particularly harsh on Searles, the recruits undergo intense training. While Shaw struggles with Mulcahy’s treatment of his friend and the severity he imposes on all the soldiers, he realizes that it is necessary to prepare them for what lies ahead. One soldier, named Trip, decides to desert but is caught and punished by Shaw in front of the regiment. Afterward, Shaw discovers that Trip only left in search of proper shoes for his fellow soldiers who were being denied supplies.
