Glory Daze (1995)
Glory Daze (1995) is an American independent comedy film written and directed by Rich Wilkes. The story follows Jack Freeman, a 22-year-old graduating from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in art. Dealing with a recent breakup with his ex-girlfriend Dina, Jack shares a house nicknamed ‘El Rancho’ with four friends. Rob is also graduating and planning to move to Los Angeles with his girlfriend Joanie. However, he has concerns about settling down and living close to Joani’s mother. Dennis, on the other hand, is a perpetual student who has three degrees under his belt and will be pursuing an MBA program in Michigan after spending six years at UCSC. Mickey, the group’s cartoonist, still has one year left of college but holds feelings for their mutual friend Chelsea.
Unfortunately, he is too timid to express these sentiments to her. Lastly, there’s Josh, known as ‘Slosh’, who once had a promising academic future but chose instead to drop out of college and lead a life of drinking while working various mundane jobs. Luther, the art professor, critiques Jack’s sculpture project for reflecting an ordinary, suburban, middle-class perspective. In contrast, he commends Dennis’ thesis – a collection of photos capturing Slosh’s alcohol-fueled lifestyle and menial jobs – and even offers him an apprenticeship opportunity. Jack speculates that Luther’s approval may stem from a romantic interest in Dennis, which Dennis quickly dismisses. In an attempt to prolong their college experience, Jack persuades his friends to put off their individual plans and continue living at El Rancho for another year.
