God Willing (2015)
In Edoardo Falcone’s comedic Italian film, God Willing (2015), Tommaso is a renowned cardiac surgeon and self-proclaimed atheist. However, when his son Andrea, a medical student, informs the family of his plans to become a priest, Tommaso is both shocked and frustrated with Catholicism. To prevent this change, he enlists the help of his son-in-law Gianni and goes undercover during Andrea’s absence at a retreat to expose Father Don Pietro, whom he believes has influenced his son. As tensions rise within the family, Tommaso’s wife Carla turns to alcohol as her dissatisfaction in their marriage grows. Meanwhile, their daughter Bianca becomes intrigued by Catholicism and embraces the religion despite her father’s disapproval.
Upon discovering Tommaso’s plan, Fr. Pietro enlists his help as a handyman for a month to renovate a church together. This allows Tommaso to keep his secret about Andrea from being exposed. As they work together, Tommaso’s demeanor softens and he becomes more amiable towards his colleagues and patients. Fr. Pietro takes him to a peaceful hilltop overlooking a lake, where he shares the belief that everything happens according to God’s will and plan. As a result, Tommaso’s marriage improves. Before excusing himself, Tommaso’s son reveals that the girl is his lover and plans to continue pursuing medicine.
