God's Own Country (2017)
God’s Own Country (2017) is a British romantic drama film by Francis Lee, marking his first feature as director. Set in the springtime of Yorkshire, this heartfelt story follows Johnny Saxby, an isolated sheep farmer who drowns out his daily frustrations with alcohol and casual relationships. However, everything changes when a Romanian migrant worker named Gheorghe is hired for the lambing season. The arrival of Gheorghe sparks a passionate relationship that leads Johnny down a new path. Ever since his father Martin suffered a stroke and became physically disabled, Johnny has shouldered the responsibilities of running the family’s sheep and cattle farm in Northern England. He carries out his duties without much enthusiasm, partly because Martin is constantly watching over him with difficulty while using a cane to walk.
Johnny combats boredom by drinking heavily at the pub, reaching the point of vomiting each time, and engaging in casual, unemotional sexual encounters with whatever man he comes across. In the midst of a busy birthing season, Martin hires Gheorghe Ionescu, a migrant worker from Romania, for a one-week period. From the start, Johnny and Gheorghe clash due to Johnny’s misguided belief that all Romanians are deceitful gypsies. However, contrary to Johnny’s assumptions, Gheorghe grew up on a farm and takes great pride in his work unlike Johnny. While away working on a remote part of the farm for several days, their animosity escalates into physical altercations and ultimately results in a tense sexual relationship between them.
