Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) is an American monster film directed and co-written by Michael Dougherty. As a sequel to the 2014 film Godzilla and the third installment in the MonsterVerse, it follows five years after the initial discovery of Titans, colossal creatures that have emerged from hiding. Dr. Emma Russell, a paleobiologist working for Monarch, an organization dedicated to studying Titans, and her daughter Madison witness the hatching of Mothra, a larva Titan. Emma uses the ‘Orca’, a frequency-emitting device designed to control Titan behavior, to calm Mothra. Meanwhile, former British Army Colonel Alan Jonah and his eco-terrorist group attack their research base and kidnap Emma and Madison. During this chaos, Mothra escapes and undergoes metamorphosis under a nearby waterfall.
Monarch scientists Drs. Serizawa and Graham seek the help of former employee Dr. Russell, Emma’s ex-husband and Madison’s father, to locate them. Despite his distaste for Godzilla, who he blames for his son Andrew’s death in San Francisco, Mark eventually agrees to join the Monarch team. They trace Godzilla to Antarctica, where Jonah intends to release a three-headed Titan called ‘Monster Zero’. After Emma frees and awakens the hostile creature, it mercilessly destroys Monarch’s G-Team, engages in a brutal fight with Godzilla, and fatally devours Graham before escaping. The team soon realizes that Emma is collaborating with the terrorists. From a secure Monarch bunker, she makes contact and argues that the Titans must be unleashed to restore the Earth from human-caused damage, citing Monarch’s research showing their ability to revitalize ecosystems through terraforming.
