Going in Style (1979) is an American heist comedy/drama film written and directed by Martin Brest. Three senior citizens, Joe, Al, and Willie, reside together in a small apartment situated in Queens, New York City. In order to escape their mundane routine of spending their days on a park bench, Joe proposes the idea of a ‘stick-up’. Despite their lack of experience as criminals, Al eventually agrees to borrow three pistols from his nephew Pete’s gun collection. Going ahead with the plan while disguised with novelty glasses, the trio successfully carries out the heist and obtains $35,000. However, their excitement is cut short when Willie suffers a fatal heart attack. In order to help out Willie’s family financially, Joe and Al give $25,000 to Pete and his family under the pretense that it is from Willie’s life insurance policy.
After deciding to use the rest of their $10,000 on a trip to Las Vegas, Al and Joe found success at the craps table, winning over $70,000. However, the trip took a toll on Al’s health and he passed away during their stay, shortly after attending Willie’s funeral. After informing Pete of his uncle’s death, Joe shares details of their bank heist and Las Vegas adventure. He entrusts Pete with the remaining cash from both endeavors and urges him to keep it safe in his deposit box without disclosing its existence. The following day, while en route to pay his respects at Al’s funeral, Joe is apprehended by authorities and admits to the robbery but remains silent about what happened to the money. During a visit from Pete in prison, he suggests returning at least part of the stolen funds in order to potentially receive a lighter punishment.
