Gone Baby Gone (2007), an American neo-noir thriller, marks the directorial debut of Ben Affleck. Adapted from Dennis Lehane’s 1998 novel by Affleck and Aaron Stockard, the film is set in Dorchester, Boston. Private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro are drawn into a search for four-year-old Amanda, whose mother Helene McCready pleads for her safe return on television. When Helene’s sister and brother-in-law hire the detectives to find Amanda, they encounter a web of criminal activity involving Helene’s drug addiction and involvement with local figure Cheese. After uncovering Ray’s murder by Cheese’s associates, Patrick and Angie team up with police detectives Remy Bressant and Nick Poole to rescue Amanda from Cheese’s grasp. In an emotional moment, Helene confesses she had buried stolen money in Ray’s yard and urges Patrick to bring Amanda home unharmed.

Patrick arranges a meeting with Cheese, where he attempts to negotiate the return of the stolen money in exchange for Amanda. However, Cheese adamantly denies any involvement in the girl’s disappearance. The next day, Captain Jack Doyle shares a telephone transcript with Patrick, revealing Cheese’s attempt to set up an exchange for Amanda. Unfortunately, the exchange at a nearby quarry turns chaotic as a gunfight erupts and results in Cheese’s death. Tragically, it is believed that Amanda drowned in the quarry’s pond and her body is recovered by Angie. As a gesture of kindness, Angie retrieves Amanda’s doll and returns it to her mother Helene. In light of this unfortunate turn of events, Doyle decides to retire early due to public backlash over the incident; which hits hard for him since he had also lost his own daughter years ago.
