Will Hunting, just twenty years old, has recently been released from prison and works as a janitor at MIT. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with his friends Chuckie, Billy, and Morgan. One day, Professor Gerald Lambeau challenges his graduate students with a difficult combinatorial mathematics problem on the blackboard. To everyone’s surprise, Will anonymously solves the problem flawlessly. Impressed by this unknown genius, Lambeau presents an even more challenging problem. Late one night, he catches Will writing the solution on the blackboard but initially mistakes him for a vandal and chases him away.
While at a bar, Will encounters Skylar, an English woman who is about to graduate from Harvard College and has plans to attend medical school at Stanford. Meanwhile, Lambeau realizes that Will was not causing trouble but rather solving a problem and inquires with campus maintenance about his whereabouts. He discovers that Will has been placed at MIT through a parole program and obtains the contact information for his parole officer. The next day, Will and his friends get into a physical altercation with a gang that includes someone who used to bully him as a child. As a result of attacking a police officer who responded to the scene, Will is placed under arrest. Lambeau attends his court appearance and observes as Will defends himself.
